Wearable Arts

Over the weekend I went to a fabulous show: Wearable arts! This show was more about art than fashion, but it was still a blast! The shows were split into two categories, adults and youth (the youth was from grade 1-6).

Adult Show

Full of color and excitement! These outfits were made to entertain the audience, and all of them delivered. Most of the costumes seemed to have come from random ideas and issues. Environment, dreams and food. To my surprise there was a lot of Japanese influence, four of the costumes were nearly dedicated to the Kimono dress.

Youth Show
This was some of the cutest performances from kids, children running around in outfits on stage. Isn't it funny how something so simple is also cute and hilarious? The children's themes were more concentrated to friends, pets and Christmas. A lot of the girls had ribbon in their hair and the audience even got to see the chicken dance!

My Favorite: Adult Show

This creation was my favorite! It was the complete combination, hat, umbrella and dress. The materials used gave it great texture that everyone could see, floral patterns with a patch-rip idea in construction made the outfit very intricate. The care in making a hat and umbrella to match it was a smart addition. The hat was on like a fascinator/cocktail hat and had colorful fabric floating behind. I remember a lot of women wearing cocktail hats at the local races, and again now at wearable arts! My conclusion: The cocktail hat has come back from the depths of loneliness and into the spotlight once again.

This classy creation was my 2nd favorite. A mix of ideal elegance and old wallpaper. What intrigued me was the construction: how did she put it together? All the frills? The slanted hat? And elbow-length gloves? I love the shape and movement and glamor that was injected into it. Maybe my curiosity got the better of me and led me to adore this artwork

The Japanese inspired frock kept the traditional make-up and outline but added new colorings and crimped the fabric to give it more shape and detail. The black and gold ensemble, I thought looked tres tres chic! I would wear that! And it's made out of tyre lining, that's right, old tyre lining! It's crazy!
