The original runway inspiration for this trend comes from the Marc by Marc Jacobs S/S 10 show, where the models' lips were painted electric magenta for a brazen beauty look with punk rock undertones. Created by the masterful maquillage maestro Dick Page, who is also the Artistic Director for Shiseido, these bright fuchsia lips are obviously the most outrageous example of the trend, but we think they actually translate to real-life quite nicely. To get the exact shade, start by prepping your lips with a moisturizing lip balm. Then apply a layer of Shiseido's Perfect Rouge Lipstick ($25) in Fuchsia RS320, followed by a touch of bright pink high-pigment powder, which will make the color pop. (Try MAC Pro's Pigment ($19.50) in Magenta Madness or Red Electric or Make Up For Ever's Star Powder ($19) in Iridescent Fuchsia; the first two are matte, while the final suggestion offers a slightly shimmery version.)
Of course, if the full-tilt fuchsia runway version is a bit much for you, just look at the way stylish celebs are wearing the tint. For example, if you're interested in an understated iteration, like the soft shade Keira Knightley was snapped wearing as she left London's Comedy Theatre earlier this month or the pretty pink Maggie Gyllenhaal wore to the Oscars, try NARS' Lipstick ($24) in Schiap or shu uemura's Rouge Unlimited Lipstick ($23) in WN 249. We also love the wearable color Gwyneth Paltrow picked for an event at the Hotel La Mamounia in Marrakech, Morocco; try Dolce & Gabbana's Lipstick ($30) in Shocking, shown above, for a look-a-like product.
If you're ready to embrace this pink-purple hue with all your heart, we have some product suggestions from Chloe Sevigny and Lake Bell for you. According to Bell's makeup artist, Julie Harris, the actress showed off NARS' Lipstick ($24) in Funny Face at the premiere of It's Complicated in New York—a fabulous selection indeed. Meanwhile, Chloe Sevigny's shade of choice is the most popping purple of the bunch; she was spotted at the after-party for the HBO show How To Make It In America wearing MAC's Lipstick ($14) in Violetta. Try any of these vibrant hues—or our recent Spring Essentials pick—for a fabulous fuchsia look!
