Chloe Sevigny won't leave us alone. Oh, it's not her fault, of course, but between her star-turn on Big Love (the show is currently in the middle of season four), spring's braid trend (which never fails to remind us of her BL character, Nicolette Grant), and repeatedly intriguing red-carpet wardrobe choices (like the lilac Valentino gown she wore to the Globes), we can't get her out of our heads. Not that this is a bad thing; the actress has consistently captivating personal style and, in addition to wearing wonderful clothes, she also creates them for her collaborative line with Opening Ceremony. All in all, Sevigny's taste is totally worth celebrating, so we shall do just that in today's Style Spotlight.
One of the things we like best about Sevigny's style is the way she always surprises us with her outfit selections for evening events. Rather than just going for a simple solid cocktail dress or making a safe choice, she tries trend-driven outfits and always picks interesting shoes with plenty of straps. For example, for the Aaron Young exhibition party at the Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills, Sevigny showed up in Dior's semi-sheer organza Niki Dress ($10,500, 800.929.DIOR) with Miu Miu's Strappy Suede Sandals ($595), a black alligator Lana Marks Provance Clutch ($8950, 212.355.6135), Buccellati earrings, and a Stephen Russell bracelet. The floral frock is appropriate, but still has a bit of edge thanks to the diaphanous material that allows a bit of bra to peek through. Sevigny selected a similar silhouette for the MOCA NEW 30th anniversary party in Los Angeles, when she wore a runway look from Miu Miu's S/S 10 collection. The Nude Sheer Tulle Top with Crystal Embroidery ($2535) and White Cotton Piquet Dog Print Skirt ($905)which are both available in select Miu Miu boutiquesoffer a mix of patterns (birds on the sleeves, dogs on the skirt). The duet prints plus the light color palette makes Sevigny's ensemble a superb choice for spring.
Of course, our Spotlight star doesn't always opt for high hemlines at night. Occasionally she takes the fully-covered route, like the ensemble she put together for Opening Ceremony's London Fashion Week Party: a black-and-white vintage turtleneck paired with a belt, boots, cardi and trousers from her own Chloe Sevigny for Opening Ceremony line. All of this was accessorized with a long strap Chanel bag and her signature red lipstick. This understated look is quite darling, much like the cocktail shorts she was snapped wearing in Beverly Hills last year. With a pair of Comme des Garcons sunglasses parked on her head, Sevigny looked smart in a pale pink blouse and scalloped tan cocktail shorts, both from Chloe's S/S 09 collection (we're referring to the French fashion house, just to clarify!).
Even when Sevigny is dressed way down, she is still worth writing about, as the final image in today's story reveals. The actress, seen at LAX after her Golden Globe win last month, makes perfectly on-point off-duty choices and reminds us why we love our 501s so much. Sevigny styled a worn-in pair of Levi's jeans with a Polo scarf, Oasis leather jacket, Comme des Garcons shades, and her own Chloe Sevigny for Opening Ceremony shoes. She carried two wildly disparate bagsa traditional L.L. Bean Boat and Tote Bag ($24.95) and an oversized Balenciaga carryallwhich exemplifies her classic-but-cool fashion sensibilities.
If you're ready to emulate Sevigny's amazing personal style, we've got a ton of suggestions for you! Just to make this easy, we'll go through the ensembles from left to right and list a few of our favorite pieces for each outfit. Starting with the Opening Ceremony party, obviously the key to recreating this look is a black-and-white shirt: we like Oasis' Stripe Bodysuit ($43) and Crumpet's Rivera Striped Cashmere Tank ($240), but if you prefer navy, don't miss Elizabeth and James' Long-Sleeve Striped Pocket Tee ($195). Then simply add your favorite wide-leg trousers or Chloe Sevigny for Opening Ceremony's Pleated Pants ($153 on sale), a fabulous gray cardi (like the BDG PE Cardigan ($29) in Dark Grey), and a cute quilted bag (Topshop's The Paris by Marc B($70) or ASOS' Quilted Lock Across Body Bag ($26) are both like thrifty thrills).
Next up we have some cocktail frocks (always a favorite around the WhoWhatWear.com office). For a black-and-white print dress, try BCBG Max Azria's Printed Minidress ($128) or MinkPink's Shattered Dreams Dress ($118). We also think Sevigny would approve of Catherine Malandrino's Relaxed Couture Ruffle Dress ($545), which offers a perfect hybrid between the lilac Valentino gown she wore to the Globes and the Dior dress in today's art. Shoe-wise we suggest saving up for her exact Miu Mius, but for a less expensive version, check out Steve Madden's Loyyall Platform Strappy Pumps ($90). For Sevigny's other party look, we offer you this suggestion: take a nude toplike American Apparel's Short Sleeve T-Shirt Leotard ($28) or ASOS' Sheer Seam Shirt ($31) in Nudethen add a crystal bib necklace, like Haute Hippie's Crystal Bib Necklace ($575) or Forever 21's Pearly Beaded Bib Necklace ($19.80), and presto! You have your own personalized version of her Miu Miu blouse! (Additionally, you could try Forever 21's Sequins Galore Knit Top ($24.80) which is an all-in-one gray tank alternative.)
For those of you who would prefer to recreate two of Sevigny's slightly-to-very casual looks (meaning: the dress-shorts outfit or her denim-and-leather travel ensemble), we have some ideas for you too! For the former, we urge you to check out Kimchi Blue's Scalloped Shorts ($24) and Diane von Furstenberg's Taipa Shorts ($198). Pair either one with Silence & Noise's Shoulder Detail Blouse ($48) in First Blush and your favorite skin-tone shoes to create a Sevigny-like look. Finally, for our last Style Spotlight outfit, we suggest starting with a great pair of jeanstry Levi's 501 Jeans ($68) in Hyper Authentic or Levi's 501 Jeans ($78) in Rather Ripped ($78)and a simple moto jacket, like the Oasis Cropped Biker ($215). Then all you need are some silver shades like these Alexander Wang for Linda Farrow Sunglasses ($325) or Topshop's Small Round Plastic Sunglasses ($30) in Silver and a L.L. Bean Boat and Tote Bag ($24.95) to solidify your Sevigny-inspired outfit!
