Currently Channeling: Northern Exposure

When it comes to fish-out-of-water tales, not much can beat Northern Exposure. The series—which was on CBS from 1990-1995—follows Dr. Joel Fleischman, a born-and-bred New Yorker, who is forced to move to Cicely, Alaska (a tiny town populated by eccentric characters) in order to pay back his medical school debt. There the good doctor finds himself living among an unforgettable cast of characters such as Maggie O'Connell, the beautiful and feisty bush pilot with whom he has a love-hate relationship, Marilyn Whirlwind, his laconic and wise Native American receptionist, and the philosophical ex-con radio-host Chris Stevens (played by a pre-Sex and the City John Corbett), who is known to quote Goethe and Jung in between sets. Of course, like all of our mid-nineties favorites, N.E. also featured memorable costumes that, upon reflection, have steadily crept into our modern-day closet (no wonder, we were so eager to add to our Pendleton collections this winter!). Plus, with all of the fur and knit patterns sent down the influential runways of Matthew Williamson and Diane von Furstenberg, we simple knew that Northern Exposure was next up in our Currently Channeling series!

Topshop Polar Bear Intarsia Coatigan ($170)
Native American blankets are a beautiful home accoutrement, but when you've got to venture out into the cold to go about your daily duties, you'd be wise to pick up this Topshop "coatigan" to keep you cozy. Not only is this barn coat a treat for the eyes, but the hip-length piece also comes in a wool-blend material, which is guaranteed to keep you feeling haute! Joel Fleischman's wise and quiet receptionist, Marilyn Whirlwind, always wore a sweater or coat in this style, and since we loved her so much, we consider this selection an homage to her!

Paul Leinburd by Crown Cap Full Fur Rabbit Hat ($127)
If you've ever spent time outdoors on a freezing day, you know that a furry cap is just about the best way to combat the wind-chill factor and frigid temperatures. This Crown Cap topper has the extra benefit of earflaps, which will keep you insulated and in style when it gets down to single digits!

Current/Elliott Super Slouchy Cropped Skinny ($238)
If you are on the lookout for great jeans, you really can't beat Current/Elliott's perfect pairs. Though we love their entire line, we think this super slouchy and worn-in style is the best choice for all of your Northern Exposure needs. They are roomy enough to fit over your long johns and the cropped length is ideal if you want to tuck them into your favorite L.L. Bean snow boots!

Joie The Pepper Tote ($260)
When it comes to purses, we strongly believe that a slightly oversized tote is a great way to schlep your daily essentials in an effortless and efficient way. Of course, this spring is all about military-inspired materials and shapes, so we highly suggest that you get clicking on this divine Joie design! We can totally envision Maggie O'Connell stashing her necessities in this olive satchel for a day flying in and out of Cicely!

Free People Lady of the Lake Ring ($34)
Learning about the indigenous people and culture of Alaska was one of Joel Fleischman's greatest discoveries upon moving to Cicely. We think this gorgeous carved bronze ring is a terrific tribute to the decorative headwear worn by the senior tribesmen and women, and the jade stone is a lovely organic accent to this adjustable sized piece of jewelry.

H81 Zippered Ankle Lounge Pant ($15)
Whether you are lounging around your cabin tuning into your favorite radio show or heading to The Brick for a pint, we think that these harem-esque heather sweatpants are chic in the country or the city this winter!

DSquared2 Pippi Boots ($795)
Karl Lagerfeld started yet another sartorial revolution when he sent models down the runway in surprisingly stylish clogs during Chanel's S/S 10 show. Ever since, we've been lusting after a pair of Dutch-inspired soles, and these DSquared2s certainly fit the bill; after all, the shearling lining and metallic studs truly elevate these lace-ups to must-have status!

Steven Alan Checked Boyfriend Shirt ($160)
Plaids are always a smart winter pick, but we particularly like the bright hues of this Steven Alan boyfriend gem! Button it up and roll the sleeves for running errands on casual Sunday or layer it over a tank when the weather warms up!

Urban Outfitters' Owl Posts ($12)
The beautiful presentation of the great outdoors in Northern Exposure was a hallmark of the series, but we also loved the show because of its sense of humor. These cute owl shaped earrings are a clever and adorable nod to the symbol of wisdom in the natural world
