Inspired By: Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen

While athletes all over the world are getting in the zone for the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, there is a different kind of high-stakes prep taking place for some of our favorite fashionable stars: red-carpet dressing! With all the various awards presentations and cocktail soirees on the horizon—not to mention last night's Globes (more on that tomorrow)—we too are getting swept up in giddy anticipation. So today, we wanted to change gears on our Inspired By feature: instead of reinterpreting one designer's collection, we decided to riff on the glamorous style of the most glamorous designer duo we know: the Sisters Olsen. After all, they may not be up for any golden statuettes this awards season, but if there was a gold medal for looking fantastic, they would certainly win that prize!
Seen here en route to the premiere of Nine at New York City's legendary Ziegfeld Theater last month, our subjects du jour showed off their own signature brand of chic. While they didn't opt for traditional gowns, they made dressy separates look top-notch by adding high-drama accents like furry vests, metallic bed coats, statement heels, and lots of accessories. As you can see the results are quite stellar and we think totally worthy of representation in today's Inspired By story!

1. H&M Sequin Jacket ($50)

One of the surest ways to add a little razzle-dazzle to your favorite monochromatic staples is by layering on a sparkling shrug, as Mary Kate Olsen did at the star-studded Nine screening in New York. Though her exact piece is a vintage treasure, be sure to check out this shining style from H&M!

2. J. Crew Cropped Trousers ($118) in Black

The Olsens have impeccable taste, especially when it comes to picking the sort of simple and elegant basics that one builds an entire wardrobe around. These J. Crew trousers are absolutely must-haves for any fancy-pants holes you may have in your closet (plus, the cropped length is ideal for drawing attention to your favorite statement heels this winter!).

3. Nasty Gal Mongolian Shag Vest ($130)

Both Mary Kate and Ashley are often spotted wearing interesting pieces in luxurious fabrics. This shag vest from online gem Nasty Gal is a great way to help you mimic the cozy chic look of the Olsens' favorite deluxe vest!

4. House of Harlow 1960 Cabochon Bangles ($150) in Red and Black

It's no surprise that House of Harlow 1960's bangles are a spot-on suggestion for today's muses. These bracelets feature eye-catching black and red stones and have a sturdy vintage feel to them, making them the obvious choice for any aspiring Olsen-ite!

5. Topshop Boutique Silk Maxi Skirt ($100)

While the extra-soft long skirts made by The Row are certainly enviable, you can get a similar style without making such a hefty investment. This Topshop number is a wise choice, as it comes in divine silk and can be dressed up (with a leopard print coat) or dressed down (try your favorite band-shirt!).

6. Elizabeth and James Nora Pumps with Applique Heel ($365)

Though Ashley wore a pair of Manolo Blahnik Hangisi Pumps ($945) to the Nine premiere, the Olsen twins are also notorious for their love of super-high and dramatic heels (Giambattista Valli and Fendi come to mind!). These Elizabeth and James metallic soles come complete with a killer appliquè touch and platform, making these heels the height of style!
