Much like the idea that exceptional personal style is all about the high-low mix, we try to keep WhoWhatWear.com's daily content equally diverse. So while we love discussing the fancy frocks and gorgeous jewels that are integral to awards show dressing, obviously we must temper that with some more down-to-earth options as well. Accordingly, today we're delighted to present our monthly installment of WWW: Tips, featuring a range of transitional and trend-driven ensembles from fashionable celebs and industry tastemakers alike. You'll find an assortment of inspiring outfits to choose from, including everything from Emma Robert's subtle lingerie look to Jessica Joffe's savvy blend of spring's standout neutrals. We hope you enjoy!
Tip # 1: Pair a sheer shirt with a bright bra.
The hottest hues for spring are indubitably pastels and neutral khaki colors, but that doesn't mean you can't look edgy—oh no! If you want to add some spice to these sweeter shades, simply remember how Emma Roberts brought a little pizazz to her outfit at a Teen Vogue and Louis Vuitton party last month. The newly blonde actress freshened up her black Louis Vuitton Soft Pants ($1950, 866.VUITTON) and Cancan Ankle Strap Pumps ($1270, 866.VUITTON) by pairing them with a nude Bra Knit Top ($1275, 866.VUITTON). The button-down comes with a bright bra underneath, which adds some pop to sheer shirt. Emulate Roberts' well-executed ensemble by combining a semi-translucent top with your favorite neon underpinnings. For the former, we suggest checking out ASOS' Sheer Seam Shirt ($31), which is available in nude or black, Preen's investment-worthy Space Blouse ($813), or Mabel's Grace Lace Blouse ($288) in nude. As for the lingerie aspect of this look, you can't go wrong with Topshop's Longline Paisley Lace Bralet ($40) in pink, Free People's Cheeky Lace Bra ($38) in hot pink or violet, or (our favorite) Deborah Marquit's Lace Underwire Bra ($185) in fluorescent pink or fluorescent lime—all are options you'll want to show off!
Tip # 2: Slip into a patterned blazer now.
When creating a post-winter transitional outfit, we always look for cold-weather classics with a bit of a twist. We spotted a fresh variation of this trick on Margherita Missoni recently, when she arrived at the Milan premiere of Valentino: The Last Emperor wearing a signature wave knit jacket from Missoni's F/W 09 collection, similar to the Raschel Knit Coat ($3162). The pattern is an unexpected update to this wardrobe essential and adds a lovely layer of texture and interest to her outfit. While we've yet to find the perfect replacement for a Missoni knit, we can tell you that there are a few fun options out there, such as ASOS' Stripe Ponti Long Line Blazer ($102). Additionally we found two floral iterations—Topshop's Floral Jersey Blazer ($110) and Free People's Floral Long Seamed Blazer ($128)—that are sure to take you into spring stylishly.
Tip # 3: Try out the khaki craze with a dress.
In just a few short months, we predict that you'll swap your boyfriend jeans for a baggy and cuffed pair of chinos and will suddenly want to wear a cotton field jacket instead of a little leather version. That said, we know that the season's "khaki craze" is still percolating, which is why now is the perfect time to start wearing the trend. Even better: take a page from stylist and L'Uomo Vogue editor Giovanna Battaglia's stylish notebook and go for a military-inspired khaki dress. The fearless fashion insider attended the debut of "The Martus Maw"—an exhibition of French artist Nicolas Pol's work, presented by Vladimir Restoin Roitfeld and RVCA—wearing Alexander Wang's Safari Double Breasted Dress with Wrap Belt ($765) with loads of accessories. While we love the button-detailed mini from Wang's Resort 10 collection, if you're looking for a less expensive and more feminine version, definitely check out BCBG's Stretch Poplin Shirt Dress with Ruffled Skirt ($268) too.
Tip # 4: Go for a shorts suit this spring.
Generally speaking, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone in the WhoWhatWear.com office wearing a suit of any kind. But that just might change, dear readers, thanks to a little inspiration from model Katharina Friedrich. Snapped at the Louis Vuitton Cruise 10 launch at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York, the leggy stunner caught our attention with her ensemble of a Short Tweed Blazer ($3380, 866.VUITTON), Tweed Short Jumper ($3169, 866.VUITTON), and Shimmer Ankle Boots ($950, 866.VUITTON). We love the look of shorts instead of a skirt or trousers and were equally enamored with Friedrich's footwear choice—it just makes the whole head-to-toe look much more youthful. We'll try to recreate her jaunty ensemble this spring by pairing Marc by Marc Jacobs' Rosemary Jacquard Jacket ($398) and Rosemary Jacquard Shorts ($178) with our favorite peep-toe booties, and so should you! Additionally, you can check out Elizabeth and James' Resort Blazer ($435) and the brand's Drapey Silk Shorts ($265); we think the combo adds up to a white hot look that's perfect for the warm weather to come.
Tip # 5: Pick up a long, lean maxi skirt.
As we discussed in a Trend Report last month, sometimes a girl's got to ditch her minis and reach for something with major length instead. The beautiful model-turned-designer Ben Grimes reminded us of this maxim recently, when she turned up at the British Fashion Awards in London wearing a silvery tank tucked into a ground-grazing skirt. Chic? And how! Grimes' sleek styling choices are certainly easy to recreate, and we highly suggest doing just that. Simply pick up a similar top, like Helmut Lang's Metallic Racer Back Tank ($160) or Victoria Beckham Denim's Metallic Racer-back Tank ($195), and slip it into a long, lean skirt. Try ASOS' Knitted Maxi Skirt ($43) for an inexpensive thrill, though we also quite like Rachel Pally's Rachel Pally Fortuna Long Skirt ($194) and Elizabeth and James' Button Back Skirt ($395) as well.
Tip # 6: Mix up the season's best neutrals.
Our last looking-ahead tip comes courtesy of the lovely Jessica Joffe and the chic neutral outfit she wore to a Chloe and Vogue preview of the former's S/S 10 collection at the Chloe boutique in New York. Joffe deftly mixed a pair of pleat-front pants in a wonderful wheat hue with a peachy silk blouse and a white blazer, resulting in a light and lovely look. While these items are not available yet, we sleuthed out the perfect pieces to let you achieve her style right now. Try a bronze tank like Joie's Loreli Racer Back Tank ($288) or Alloy's Cameron Racerback Tank ($20) under a simple white blazer, such as Twenty8Twelve's Cotton Longline Blazer ($416). Then you simply need to track down the right trousers! If you're a bit more directional, try Alexander Wang's Baggy Pants ($450), or if you're looking for a more classic silhouette, check out Vince's Cropped Pants ($225) or James Perse's Flat Front Chinos ($165). Not sure you're ready to commit? Don't miss Aqua's Khaki Pants ($68)—they're a steal of a deal! Whatever you pick, these pants are sure to be a spring essential, so definitely spend some time searching for your perfect pair.
