What Would She Wear: Kristen Bell

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Whether she's issuing social warnings as the unseen narrator of Gossip Girl or holding her own against charismatic comedic actors like Jason Segal, Russell Brand, and Jason Bateman, Kristen Bell always infuses her characters with a sort of grounded confidence that's charming to watch. Bell brings these assured sensibilities to the way she dresses too, as she executes challenging shapes and styles with aplomb whenever she hits the red carpet. Never one to shy away from a bold print—we adored the blue-and-white ikat Jenni Kayne strapless gown she wore to the premiere of Forgetting Sarah Marshall?—we give Bell props for pulling off looks that most diminutive dressers are afraid to try. Whether it's oversized ruffles, cropped jumpsuits, and cut-out frocks, whenever she tackles tricky trends, the results are divine.

Her secret seems to be relatively simple: look for pieces that are daring in one way (such as a unique pattern, unexpected cut, or interesting material), focus on a key bauble (say, a stack of bold bracelets), and if possible, pick an outfit that nips in at the waist. (And of course, help from her extremely talented stylist, Nicole Chavez, doesn't hurt either!) Bearing these wardrobe rules in mind, we've assembled a Bell-inspired look for you today. You know you love it...xoxo.

1. H&M Linen Zipper Jacket ($49.95)

As we mentioned earlier, Bell is very savvy about dressing for her shape and often selects pieces that have interesting, subtle details, so we think she'd approve of this little jacket from H&M. The double-zipper front is intriguing without being showy, while the cropped length would be ultra-flattering for her frame.

2. Aqua Crystal Chandelier Drop Earrings ($35)

While we love the accessories overkill look for spring, we have to admit that Bell's more judicious approach to outfit accentuation is worth noting. In the sprit of our muse's jewelry restraint, we decided to spotlight a single pair of earrings by Aqua. The white metal and resin drop earrings are sizeable (they're over three inches long) and stylish, so you won't have to add any other baubles.

3. Topshop Shark Print Dress ($310)

As a nod to season's athletic aesthetic and the loads of scuba/surf-influenced outfits we saw on the S/S 10 runways, we couldn't help but include this frock, which perfectly blends the two trends. The silk-and-mesh mini dress reminded us of something Bell would choose, primarily due to its pretty print and innovative design (the back has an awesome racerback-meets-string-bikini like look).

4. MAC Lipstick ($14) in Myself

Bell will break out a bright red lipstick every once in a while, but nine times out of ten you can find the blonde beauty wearing a pretty nude color. Since our subject du jour obviously loves an understated lip, we think she'd flip for this new MAC lipstick from the brand's All Ages, All Races, All Sexes collection. It's perfect for her fair complexion and has a bit of luster for a subtle shine.

5. Reiss Georgia Lace-Up Boots ($335)

We've that noticed Bell has been taking more chances in her red-carpet fashion selections lately, so we think these nouveau Victorian booties might appeal to her sensibilities. While she often reaches for classic heels, she's also tried some untraditional footwear over the past few years, and would look darling in these peep-toe lace-ups.

6. Aldo Grezzana Clutch ($20)

Our final fabulous find for today may be small, but it still certainly makes a statement. Aldo's red snakeskin-like mini-bag is an excellent option for the multitasker, as you can wear it as a clutch or go for a hands-free look via the long shoulder strap. Either way, it perfectly punctuates today's What Would She Wear ensemble!
